Poetry Unit
As we embark on our "poetic" journey, I want to acquaint you with the reading and writing projects that we will complete throughout this unit of study.
READING PROJECT: My Favorite Poem Project
When I was a kid, my teacher made me read Shakespeare. And man... I hated it. Nothing against the bard, ( I think he's pretty awesome now) but I just wasn't interested. I wanted to read poems I could really understand and feel. I didn't think there was poetry for me... I was wrong. It is was out there. The perfect poem. A perfect puzzle piece for my angsty teenage soul!!! All I had to do ... was find it.
TASK: We are all going to participate in the national My Favorite Poem Project by pursuing a quest for our favorite poem. Our goal is to read and respond to around 50 poems and choose the poem that most honestly and deeply speaks to our hearts.
WRITING PROJECT: In order for us to REALLY understand what poetry is all about, we must see the world through a poet's eyes. We must see the world in a completely new way ... we must undergo the discipline... the struggle... the heart-wrenching torment of finding the perfect word. Thus, we must write.
TASK: We are going to create a classroom anthology featuring our strongest and most provocative poems. We will study the techniques and skills of master poets and infuse our writing with that knowledge.
