Course Description
Freshmen English centers on helping students develop analytical and critical thinking skills through the use of engaging and challenging texts. Students will cultivate skills necessary to communicate, investigate, argue, conclude, plan, discern, and be precise in their reading, writing, and speaking. This year, students will:

Learning Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy
RS1: Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.
RS2: Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze in detail its development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details; provide an objective summary of the text.
RS6: Analyze a particular point of view or cultural experience reflected in a work of
literature from outside the United States, drawing on a wide reading of world literature.

Course Description
Freshmen English centers on helping students develop analytical and critical thinking skills through the use of engaging and challenging texts. Students will cultivate skills necessary to communicate, investigate, argue, conclude, plan, discern, and be precise in their reading, writing, and speaking. This year, students will:
- read independently and write literary essays
- engage in discussions centered around texts
- write one exteneded fiction piece under the guidance of a mentor text
- read, analyze, and write poetry
- conduct a long-term research project in the form of a TED Talk
