EXAMPLES
OF
COPY-CAT POEMS
Below you will find several options and examples of copy-cat poems. Choose one that you feel you would like to experiment with or one that you have a strong idea for
Option A: Choose any poem you've read that has a specific or unique structure that you would like to imitate.
Option B: Write a PALINDROME. A palindrome is a poem that can be read backwards and forwards. This is a challenge. Kudos to anyone who can accomplish this...seriously. I will buy you a cake. Well...
See Faiza's draft below:
(To Be Titled)
she stands in the shadows of others
and denies to believe that
she is still capable of achieving her dreams, as well as confidence
when she looks in the mirror
she sees herself
with one eye, two prosthetic legs, and a broken nose
when she walks by, people avoid her
and each day she ignores the fact that
she is worth much more than that
she will walk with her head held high
but for now,
she is reminded that she should have hope for her future
her appearance does not truly define who she is
and words can be hurtful, but she knows that
those rumors spread rapidly
like blooming flowers in a garden
Another Example: Lost Generation by Johnathan Reed
Option C: Write a two-voice poem. Two-voice poems capture the feelings and emotions of two speakers. For example, one speaker can be a wealthy woman telling her story, while the other speaker is a poor woman telling her story. Another example is a gay person speaking and a homophobic person speaking in the same poem. I have also seen a poem written by a cancer survivor who created a poem where she talks about her experience with cancer and then her cancer speaks in the poem.
